Discipleship Opportunities

Cursillo

Cursillo is a three day learning, sharing, inspirational experience of living in a Christian community. Thirty to forty men or women participate in the weekend (Thursday evening through early Sunday evening) with a team of clergy and laypeople. The weekend includes quiet time of reflection and meditation as well as fifteen talks given by laypeople and clergy. The talks emphasize the true meaning of grace, the sacraments, worship, nature and need of prayer, living one’s daily life in union with God, studying to understand the gift of God, and introducing Christ to others by word and deed.

The atmosphere of the three days is one of joy and grace. The Cursillo is filled with talking, singing, laughter, reverence, prayer, worship, reflection and inspiration.

The married, the single, and the single again are welcome to attend Cursillo. Men attend one weekend; women another. Married couples attend back to back weekends.

Tirosh

A unique retreat where youth ages 15-20 will experience the community of Christ. On-going small group peer support is available and encouraged as youth continue on the journey of growing in faith.

My Fathers House

A weekend retreat for youth ages 12-14 devoted to exploring relationships with God, self, parents and peers from a Biblical perspective.

Community of Concerns

FaithChest & FaithQuilt Ministry

Pass on the Faith to those newest in our congregation. The Community—all ages!—is invited to share their time and talents to build FaithChests and sew FaithQuilts, which are given to children being baptized at Peace. No experience needed. Watch the bulletin announcements for the next build and sew date. Contact the church office.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

This ministry meets the 2nd Thursday of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Come when you can; leave when you must. Knitters and as well as those who crochet are welcome; members can help with any problem you may have. We have patterns for both knit and crochet. Call June, 623-362-2590, with questions.

Quilters

The quilters meet Mondays, October through March, from 8:00 to 10:00 am to make warm covers for those in need. Quilts have gone to the homeless, women’s shelters, crisis nursery, flood/earthquake victims, Ronald McDonald house, Camp ALOMA, Migrant Farm Workers, and many others. Each year about 100-150 quilts are produced from donated fabrics and scraps. No great sewing skills are required, just a desire to help tie, pin, cut, etc. Join us for a lot of fun and a great feeling of doing something good for others. Contact Annabel Childers.

Peace Lutheran Preschool

Peace Lutheran Preschool offers the community a safe, clean, and nurturing atmosphere for 3 to 5-year-old children eager to learn and hear the Word of God and what he has to offer them.

The Preschool operates five days a week; following the Peoria School District schedule. Children may enroll in a Mon/Wed/Fri or Tues/Thurs or Mon-Fri morning program 9:00 to 11:30AM. A Sack Pack program is offered Mon-Thurs at a minimal charge and extends the day until 1:00PM.

The children learn about God’s love and the good news of Christ’s love. The staff work with the children to help them increase their skills in listening, self-expression, independent work, play habits, decision making and problem solving.

Our teachers are committed Christian leaders who see their occupation not just as a job, but as a calling.

Social Concerns

The Social Concern team at Peace provides outreach for human needs within and extending beyond our church, community, state, nation, and the world. In addition to providing monetary gifts to the Grand Canyon Synod for world hunger and social ministries, our church donates needed items regularly to various local organizations including Westside Food Bank, Advent Lutheran Food Pantry, Crisis Nursery, Peace Lutheran Church, and Lutheran Thrift Shop.

Individuals also give of their time and talents by volunteering with the following projects:

  • Habitat For Humanity & Agua Prieta, Mexico—Building homes for needy families and providing meals, Bibles, and school materials for these families.
  • Pancake Breakfast At Grace Lutheran Church—Preparation and serving breakfast for Phoenix homeless on Sunday morning once a month.
  • Clothing & Toy Drives—Collection and distribution of items to the Crisis Nursery in Phoenix twice a year including Christmas Angel program.
  • Food Drives for the Homeless—Collection and distribution of funds and food for summer and fall food drives for local food pantries as well as outside the Phoenix area.
  • Environmental Issues—Promotion and awareness within our congregation of environmental issues including air, water, and soil.
