1 Kings 18:20-39

Blog – 1 Kings 18: 20-39
The prophet Elijah had a simple question for the Israelites. Would they
faithfully follow God or would they chase after the false god Baal? Because the
Chosen People had been exposed to a variety of foreign religions and beliefs
they were tempted to give homage to impotent, but attractive, idols. This was
especially true when the Creator of the universe either seemed silent or
unwilling/unable to help the Israelites during their time of need or trouble.
Elijah is simply asking the people to step up and decide. In all things and
during all times, will they place their trust and confidence in the One who led
them to the Promised Land or will they rely on the alleged power of untested
and unreliable idols?
Elijah’s question rings forth today. Who or what deserves our praise, worship
and trust? Will we place our confidence in things that glow and glitter or turn
only to the One who has promised the gifts of Abundant and Eternal Life? Will
we turn away from God in our time of trouble or turn to Him with the
assurance that He holds our lives and our future in His loving hands?
