Genesis: 50:15

“What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”

Joseph had every right to be upset with his brothers!  Initially, they plotted to kill him but then decided to sell him into servitude.

How surprised and shocked do you think the brothers were when, years later, they learned that Joseph was now second in command over all of Egypt?  They likely feared for their own lives.  Would Joseph have them arrested, flogged, enslaved, executed?   I am sure he was tempted to “pay-them-back” for the hurt and harm they caused him.

But Joseph’s heart was in a different place.  Instead of retribution he yearned for reconciliation. Rather than consumed with anger and contempt he was only interested in restoring a relationship with his brothers.

Holding grudges and seeking revenge requires a great deal of emotional energy and rarely do they bring satisfaction.  May God turn our hearts in new directions and may we experience both the power and the joy of forgiveness!
