Rev. Ryan Michael Hersch

    Rev. Ryan Michael Hersch

    Senior Pastor

I grew up in Tacoma, Washington. attending Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, where I earned my  B.A. in history. I attended Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California, where I earned my M.Div. in 2003. Following seminary, I was trained by ELCA Churchwide in Chicago as a congregational redeveloper. I went on to study in the Congregational Mission and Leadership program at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. My internship was at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beachwood, New Jersey, from 2001 to 2002. Following seminary, my first call was to redevelop Alleluia Lutheran Church in Phoenix, Arizona, where I served from 2003 to 2008. In 2008, I accepted the call to redevelop Ascension Lutheran Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona, where I served for nine years. I have served as the dean of my local conference of congregations, as the chair of Region 2’s Multi-Synodical Candidacy Committee, and as a voting member of the ELCA Churchwide Assembly.

I met my wife, Adriana, in southern Mexico while studying Spanish as part of my seminary training. We were married on September 29, 2001.  Adriana is from Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she earned her degree in architecture at the local university.  We have two sons, Sebastian (Seb for short) and  Alexander (a.k.a. Alex or Butch)  The boys are into all things Legos, Star Wars, Minecraft, Roblox, and more.

I have several passions for ministry.  I believe the Way of Jesus is a movement for the whole human family and not just an institution for Christians. I am committed to ecumenism and the larger work of the Church. I love to teach Bible study and preach and preside in worship. I enjoy helping congregational leadership to prayerfully discern a clear sense of vision, purpose, goals, and strategies for ministry and mission. I will work to help the congregation grow and to look more like Jesus, to grow to look more like the surrounding community, and to grow in terms of worship attendance and giving.  I look forward to meeting you all, as we follow the Way of Jesus together!
